Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

139 miles from downtown Nashville · about 2 hours 15 minutes

National Park Service, Fort Oglethorpe, GA and Lookout Mountain, TN

This is the oldest national military park in the country, spread across multiple units from the Chickamauga battlefield in Georgia to Point Park on top of Lookout Mountain. The Lookout Mountain units pair naturally with a Chattanooga day.

Permits, fees and access

Point Park on Lookout Mountain charges ten dollars a person for anyone sixteen and over, valid a week, and it is credit card only with no cash accepted. An annual park pass is thirty-five dollars. Every other unit is free, including Chickamauga Battlefield, Cravens House, Missionary Ridge, Orchard Knob, Signal Point and Moccasin Bend.

One thing to know first

Point Park not taking cash catches people out at the gate. Bring a card.

Access rules, fees and closures verified August 15, 2026 against the agency that manages this place. They change, sometimes without notice. Check before you drive.

I keep this list because it is genuinely how people spend weekends here, and because almost every guide to it is out of date. If you are weighing a move to Middle Tennessee and want to know which part of it puts you closest to the things you actually like, ask me. No pitch.
